Daily Limits
Daily limits control how many new cards and reviews you encounter in each study session. Configuring these limits correctly is important for maintaining a sustainable and effective study routine.
New Cards Per Day
The new cards per day setting determines how many previously unseen cards are introduced in each session. The default is 20.
Introducing too many new cards at once creates a compounding problem: each new card generates future reviews, and within a few weeks the daily review count can become overwhelming. A moderate pace of new cards ensures that your review load remains manageable over time.
If you are studying a single deck, 20 new cards per day is a reasonable starting point. If you are studying multiple decks concurrently, consider reducing this number to 10 or 15 per deck.
Maximum Reviews Per Day
The maximum reviews setting places an optional cap on the number of review cards presented in a single session. By default, there is no hard limit, all due reviews are shown.
Setting a review cap can be useful if your available study time is limited. However, be aware that capping reviews causes overdue cards to accumulate. The system prioritizes the most overdue cards first, so important reviews are not skipped entirely.
How Limits Interact
New cards and review cards draw from separate pools. The new card limit controls only the introduction of unseen cards, while the review limit controls only cards that are due for review based on the scheduling algorithm.
In a typical session, you will first see your due review cards, followed by new cards up to your daily limit. If you set both limits, the system respects each independently.
Adjusting Your Limits
You can change your daily limits from the Settings tab on the profile page. Consider adjusting your limits if:
- Review sessions are taking too long. Reduce new cards per day. The review load will decrease over the following weeks as fewer new cards enter the review cycle.
- You have extra study time. Increase new cards per day gradually. Avoid large jumps, going from 20 to 50 overnight will create a spike in reviews two to three weeks later.
- You are starting a new deck. Consider temporarily reducing new cards on your other decks to avoid overloading your schedule.
Falling Behind on Reviews
If you miss one or more days of study, overdue reviews will accumulate. When you return:
- The system prioritizes overdue cards by how far past due they are.
- Do not reset your decks. The scheduling data on each card represents real learning progress. Resetting erases that history and forces you to start from scratch.
- Work through the backlog gradually. If the overdue count is large, consider temporarily pausing new cards (set new cards per day to 0) and focusing exclusively on clearing the review queue.
- Expect some forgotten cards. After a break, you will likely need to press "Again" on cards you previously knew. This is normal and the system will adjust their schedules accordingly.
Consistency is the most effective way to prevent backlogs from forming. A short daily session is far more productive than infrequent long sessions.
