Species Documentation
Species is a visual learning platform designed for species identification. It combines image-based flashcards with spaced repetition scheduling and structured testing to help users develop lasting recognition of animals, plants, and more.
Who Is Species For?
Species serves anyone who wants to reliably identify species from sight. This includes biology and ecology students, wildlife professionals, conservation workers, naturalists, birdwatchers, and hobbyists with a serious interest in the natural world.
How It Works
The platform is built on two evidence-based learning principles: active recall and spaced repetition.
Active Recall
Active recall is the process of deliberately retrieving information from memory rather than passively reviewing it. When you see an image of a species and attempt to name it before revealing the answer, you strengthen the neural pathways associated with that knowledge. Research consistently shows that retrieval practice produces stronger, more durable memories than re-reading or passive study.
Spaced Repetition
Spaced repetition is a scheduling technique that presents information at increasing intervals over time. When you successfully recall a species, the next review is scheduled further into the future. When you struggle, the interval shortens. This approach directly counteracts the natural forgetting curve and ensures that study time is spent where it has the greatest impact.
Core Features
- Image-based flashcards — Each card features real photographs of species alongside taxonomic and ecological data. Multiple images per species provide exposure to natural variation in appearance.
- Curated deck library — Hundreds of decks organized by taxonomic category, group, and subgroup. Content covers mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, insects, arachnids, amphibians, and plants. More to come.
- Spaced repetition scheduling — An SM-2-based algorithm automatically schedules reviews at optimal intervals based on your performance with each card.
- Structured tests — Multi-level tests for each deck assess your knowledge through multiple-choice, true/false, image selection, and direct recall questions. Tests progress in difficulty across five levels.
- Progress tracking — Detailed statistics, achievement ranks, and study streaks provide visibility into your learning over time.
How Species Differs from General Flashcard Tools
Unlike generic flashcard applications, Species provides domain-specific content curated for species identification. All card data, including taxonomy, habitat, geographic range, morphological traits, etc., is structured and consistent across the library. Images are sourced from real photographs rather than illustrations or AI-generated content. The testing system goes beyond simple card review by generating varied question formats that assess different aspects of your knowledge about each species.
